How To Build A Door With A Window
A step-by-step tutorial on how to build a befouled door with drinking glass window; this DIY barn door tutorial has a video and plans to go with information technology.
Your basement tin can exist a basic space where yous store extra items and run downstairs to do your laundry a few times a week.
Or, it could exist valuable square footage where you organize your life's belongings in a clutter-free zone, accept intendance of paperwork in a quiet retreat and withal keep an heart out for missing socks from the dryer.
And so why non decorate it like the gorgeous bonus space that it is?
After finishing our basement, we decided that we wanted to split up the laundry room from the mudroom in a stylish style, with sliding barn doors.
But we didn't want the mudroom to be nighttime if the doors were closed – at that place are no windows in that infinite. And then we decided to add together glass panes in the doors.
This is my DIY tutorial on how to build a barn door with glass inserts.
HOW MUCH DOES Information technology Price TO BUILD A Barn DOOR?
The price volition depend on the size of your door or doors.
I built two doors that are each 24″ broad by fourscore″ tall, which meant that I as well needed hardware for two doors.
The cost of the wood and drinking glass was about $65 for both 24″ doors. The hardware cost most $110 (this includes the track and handles).
The full toll of building these two DIY sliding barn doors would exist near $175.
At present allow'south discuss which supplies and tools you will need to build these double barn doors.

HOW TO MEASURE FOR A SLIDING BARN DOOR
The first step is determining the size of your barn door. You need to decide if yous want a single barn door or a double. This tutorial is about building a double barn door, simply the concept is the same.
Measure the size of the opening. Mine was 47.5″ wide.
TIP: Measure the top, middle, and lesser because they could exist different. So, utilize the smallest measurement.
Side by side, add 2″ to the width measurement of your opening.
This stride is something I wish I would take done. Information technology will give your door an overhang, and believe me, yous will need it because a sliding door is unlike from a regular door. You don't want information technology to fit inside the opening; you lot want it to overlap the opening.
To make up one's mind the height of the door, you beginning need to purchase the sliding door hardware. So, check the measuring instructions from the manufacturer to calculate the height of your door.
SIDE NOTE: I didn't do this, and my door is shorter then I would accept liked, so please check your hardware instructions.
CREATE THE BARN DOOR PLANS
Before you build your sliding doors, you need to create your plan.
I've created detailed plans and hither is the link to purchase them.
If yous want a different size of door or doors, you tin can arrange the size of the plans co-ordinate to your measurements from before.
BUILD YOUR SLIDING DOORS
To help you see the steps of edifice these barn doors, I take created a video of the whole process.
And hither is the breakup of how to build these doors.
STEP 1: CREATE THE SIDES
Have 4 ii″ x six″ boards and cut them to the length of your door.
Adjacent, mark the side of each board for where the dados volition be placed to insert the drinking glass and shiplap. Call back, this tutorial is for two doors, which means there are four sides between the two.
The get-go and end of each dado will be where a console is placed later.
The tiptop and bottom dados will start/end 5″ from the edge and centered on the board. This is 1/2″ less than the actual lath size to allow for the dados on the panels. Place a marking on ane side of each board v″ from both ends.
The top dado volition exist 1/4″ wide and 1/2″ deep by 20″ in length. Place another centered mark 25″ from the end of the board. Then, write one/4″ somewhere in this section to remember the size.
After this mark, there will be a infinite of 4-1/2″ before the start of the lesser dado. Place a marking four-1/2″ from the last mark that is centered on the board to give y'all your starting mark for your bottom dado.
The bottom dado volition be 1/2″ wide and 1/2″ deep, and the length will exist between the two previous measurements.
Make sure yous mark each board.
TIP: Place the board next to each other and marking them all at the same time using a square.
Now, y'all will cut out the dados.
Take your drill with a i/four″ bit (have a 1/2″ on hand) and drill a ane/ii″ deep hole onto the top marking at each lath. This is where your one/4″ dado will exist.
So, take a 1/2″ flake and drill a i/two″ hole at the top mark for where the i/2″ dado will be on each board.
These holes will allow you to insert the router bit into the wood to start your dado.
Use your router with an edge guard attached to create your ane/4″ dados and 1/two″ dados within your marks on each board. Make sure that the edge guard is positioned and then that the dado volition be in the center of the lath.
TIP: Cut all of the same size dados first before cutting the others.
Pace 2: CREATE THE PANELS
Now it's time to create the panels that make up the middle of the doors.
These panels will also demand dados, so let's marking the boards for these. Since I am using a hand router to create my dados, I will not exist cutting the boards nonetheless because information technology's difficult to start a straight dado at an edge. I have found that I demand about two inches in from an edge to get a straight groove.
This tutorial will as well follow this method, but if you accept a tabular array saw or router table to create your dados, you tin can cutting your pieces first.
Outset by creating your marks on the side of a 2″ x6″ board for each panel. Mensurate from one border place a mark at each of these measurements: 2″, sixteen″, 17″, 31″, 32″, 46″, 47″, 61″, 62″, 76″, 77″, 91″.
These measurements volition exist where a panel will outset and terminate, so it will be your cut line later.
At present, label each department, the starting time two sections (edge to 31″) label "middle console", the next two (32″ to 61″) label "summit panel", the last two (62″ to 91″) characterization "bottom console".
Have your drill with a i/two″ chip and drill a hole at the 62″ marker 1/ii″ deep. Make sure this mark is centered on the board before drilling.
Employ your router with an edge baby-sit attached, create your one/four″ dados from the edge of the board to where the last top panels ends (61″). Remember, the dados need to be in the middle of the board!
TIP #1: Utilize the dados from the side pieces as your guide.
TIP #2: Become past the mark virtually a 1/ii″ to make sure you accept no rounded edges once the lath is cutting to size.
And so, create the 1/2″ dados in the bottom panels.
After, flip the board over to the other side and create a one/ii″ dado in the middle panels (edge to 31″). The middle panels hold both the glass and shiplap insets, and then they need both i/4″ and i/2″ dados.
TIP: I would recommend completing pace 1 and pace 2 at the aforementioned time and so you practise not have to reset your router more than needed.
At present that all the dados are created, cut the board at the marked lines. Make sure you are cutting on the right side of the line to permit each lath to be exact 14″; a saw blade removes ane/8″ with each cut.
Stride 3: CREATE POCKETS IN THE PANELS
Next, have each panel (top, middle, and bottom) and add pocket holes to the half dozen″ side of the board on the ends.
At that place volition be four per panel, and then a total of 24 pockets because you lot have half-dozen panels total (iii per door).
Pace 4: Cut THE SHIPLAP AND GLASS
Take the drinking glass cut to size at your local hardware store or drinking glass store. The glass should exist cut to fifteen″ x xx″.
Different the drinking glass, you volition need to cut the shiplap yourself. The length and the width will both need to be cut to fit inside the dados.
To determine the length for the shiplap boards, take the height of the door and decrease 34.5″ (panels and glass with the inset). Cutting the shiplap to this measurement vi times so that you will have iii per door.
Now, accept iii boards and identify them together; you may need to flip a lath to have the correct grooves together.
Then, measure the width of the three boards together – it will be probably 16.5″. These boards need to be 15″ together, and so yous will need to cut the two side pieces to make it this measurement.
If the boards are xvi.5″, you would decrease xv″, giving y'all i.5″. This and so needs to exist divided into two for each end, 3/4″. You lot would then remove iii/4″ from i side of the finish shiplap pieces.
TIP: I recommend cut an extra 1/8″ from simply one board, 7/8″, to allow the boards to fit inside the dados without consequence.
Employ a tabular array saw or jigsaw with a guild to cutting the sides of four shiplap pieces.
STEP v: SAND THE PIECES
Now that you have everything cutting, use an orbital sander to make the wood smooth.
I like to use #220 grit sandpaper and I decided to but lightly sand the shiplap because I liked the crude await.
Once every board is sanded, wipe off any dust by using a fabric.
STEP 6: Assemble THE DOORS
To assemble the doors, you will get-go with one side slice, and then piece of work your way over to the other side piece.
Place ane side board on a apartment surface, with the behind facing up.
Position i of the tiptop panels at the top of the side slice, making sure the pocket holes are facing upwards, and that the dado is facing the other 1/4″ dado.
Glue the side of the top panel, making information technology flush and square to the side board; and then, clamp the two together. Now, use the two-1/ii″ screws to adhere the pieces.
Measure 24.5″ from the edge of the side board and make a mark close to the side where the middle panel will be placed. This marking volition be where the height of the middle panel will be placed.
Now, position ane of the middle panels at this mark. Remember, the summit of the panel will be at this mark, plus the 1/4″ dado facing the other ane/4″ dado. Also, make certain the pocket holes will be facing up.
Gum the side of the middle panel, brand information technology flush and square to the side lath and then clench them together. Now, use the 2-ane/two″ screws to attach the pieces.
Next, position one of the lesser panels at the bottom of the side board. Make sure the pocket holes are facing upwardly and that the dado is facing the other ane/ii″ dado.
Glue the side of the bottom panel; make it flush and square to the side board; then, clamp them together. Now, use the ii-i/2″ screws to attach the pieces.
Now, place glue inside the ane/2″ dados (middle panel, side board, and bottom panel).
Insert the one cutting end of the shiplap into the grooves; then, insert the uncut one and finish by adding the terminal piece with the cutting side face out.
Next, place articulate caulk or silicone within the 1/4″ dados (top panel, side board, and middle panel).
Insert the glass advisedly into the grooves (it's a practiced idea to habiliment gloves for this).
SIDE Notation: Please exist careful with the glass, or it will break. I had ane break on me because the wind blew my door over while I was inserting information technology.
Now, position the other side board along with the door. Brand sure the dados are facing the correct way.
Mucilage the side of the top, heart, and bottom panel plus inside the ane/2″ dado on the side board. Too, place the clear adhesive (caulk or silicone) inside the 1/4″ dado.
And then, brand the side board flush and insert the glass and shiplap into the groves. Make certain everything is still affluent and square earlier clamping the pieces together (at the top, heart, and bottom panels. And then, apply the 2-1/two″ screws to attach the pieces together.
Next, glue the pocket plugs into place, wherever a pocket pigsty is.
Complete this process to assemble the other door the same mode. Then, allow the doors to sit for 24 hours (allow the glue fourth dimension to cure fully).
SIDE NOTE: Y'all volition want to re-sand the areas where the glue is added (after the mucilage dries) to remove whatsoever rest, or your terminate may not look as smoothen as you lot desire.
STEP seven: CREATE A Rails GROOVE
After the doors have dried, you need to cut a groove in the bottom of each door to allow the door to slide forth a track (also known as a guide). This will help the door from swinging out at the lesser when being moved.
This track piece should exist in your sliding door hardware, but if y'all're like me and don't desire to drill a hole in your flooring, y'all tin buy a sliding door guide that is placed on the wall/baseboard.
Create the groove by using a router with a bit large enough for your rail. I used 1/4″. Use the edge guide attached to the router to heart the groove in the middle of the door.
Then, cut a groove at the depth y'all need for your track beyond the whole bottom of the door (mine was one/two" but yours could be dissimilar).
STEP 8: APPLY A Terminate
Now that your doors are fully assembled, it's fourth dimension to utilize a finish.
Y'all could use a stain with a protective glaze, only the protective varnish, or paint.
I decided to stain our doors with Minwax Provincial and applied tung oil as our protective glaze.
Footstep 9: INSTALL THE DOORS
Utilise your sliding door hardware instructions to install your doors into the space just yous will probably need to add boosted trim at the top of the opening for the hardware to adhere also.
I hope this tutorial will help y'all create your own double sliding doors that have a glass insert. Recall to take your fourth dimension and exist safe.
